GTEC is a trade association of petroleum equipment contractors and environmental contractors in Georgia whose primary goal is to promote professionalism within the industry through education, training and certification. It is in its twenty-fifth year and has approximately 45 member companies.
GTEC has established itself as a voice between its members and the regulatory and petroleum marketers communities. GTEC has been able to affect changes in regulations, obtain clarifications on confusing regulatory issues and has provided technical assistance and information to the regulatory community.
GTEC provides lists of its members to the regulatory and petroleum marketer communities. It has become the regulatory agencies’ referral organization for qualified contractors. GTEC receives several phone calls each week from UST owners looking for qualified contractors to do various kinds of petroleum equipment services/operations. GTEC refers them to its membership list. Non-members of GTEC miss out on a significant number of requests for proposals.
GTEC membership is presently being made a prerequisite by several municipalities in order to bid on underground storage tank projects. The Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority (GEFA) is in charge of all state owned tanks and draws heavily from GTEC for qualified contractors.
GTEC has received the support of the various oil marketer associations and other trade associations whose members have significant petroleum distribution facilities.
GTEC provides frequent and current communications to all active and associate members through e-mail announcements to include technical and regulatory information as it is received from other industry sources.
GTEC has been able to provide various instructional courses to its members at considerable savings. This includes OSHA 40 HR and OSHA 8 HR refresher courses in addition to UST courses on installations and closures, AST installation courses, Vapor Recovery courses and a Cathodic Protection Tester Course.
GTEC has provided quarterly and/or other periodic programs that have kept its members up to date on regulatory changes as well as providing useful information on technical and business issues. Programs have included subjects such as: UST Closure Guidance, Aboveground Storage Tanks, Insurance, OSHA Safety Compliance Inspections, State Fire Marshal regulations, SPCC Plans, UST Upgrade Options, Computer Technology, Use of the Internet, Concrete, Determining True Labor Costs, Pitfalls of Growing Too Fast, EPA Sampling Procedures, Continuity Testing of Petroleum Fueling systems Hardware, and Vapor Recovery equipment changes/ decommissioning procedures.
GTEC is part of a network of over twenty state petroleum equipment contractor associations. It is one of the largest state contractor associations in the United States. These associations are assisted by the Petroleum Equipment Institute (PEI). The exchange of information between these state associations is an additional benefit to the members of GTEC.
GTEC is one of the only state associations to hold an annual/bi-annual convention for its members. Our next convention is scheduled for Feb 24 – 26, 2017 in Savannah, Georgia.
GTEC began a seminar for tank owners in 2002 named the UST Management & Compliance Assistance Seminar. This seminar has become an annual event and this year’s seminar was held on Aug 22, 2013 with over 200 attendees. GTEC members are able to display their products and services at these seminars.
GTEC also holds other seminars for its members and for other industry participants. This year, 2016, GTEC will held a Cathodic Protection Tester Course, an Aboveground Storage Tank Seminar, and is the major sponsor of an Environmental Consultant’s Seminar on Vapor Intrusion. GTEC members receive significant reduced attendance fees for these courses/events as well as reduced fees for exhibiting at these events.
GTEC’s Executive Director, Bill Greer, has become a leading petroleum equipment expert in the petroleum equipment industry within the state of Georgia. He is a regular guest speaker (twice a year) at the Georgia Tech Environmental Management Conference. He is also a certified instructor for the EPA required UST A/B Operator Training for the states of Georgia, Alabama and Texas.
